Chapter Ten

I do not see Gost again until the female volunteers from the Graecan consulate shuttle aboard the ship. These new arrivals have had time to recover—at least physically—from their abductions, and they are curious, bright, and interested as they leave the shuttle. Eighteen of them.

As I watch them, I feel someone at my elbow, and I know before looking that it is Gost. He has such a presence that I do not question why I can feel him. Surely everyone can. I have had time to lose my anger, jealousy, weirdness, whatever it should be called, and I have fallen straight into embarrassment.

I went to his room for one reason and one reason only—to have sex. He offered massage but I knew what that meant, and I knew exactly what type of massage I was after. My mind was full of what it would be like to touch him. To be touched by him. I did not care if I might push him over the edge.

I do not look at him as I apologize. “I am sorry for overreacting to your slip,” I say crisply. “I was at fault as well for falling into your bed, though I understood your need.”

He sighs. “Cider. Cider.”

“Gost will take care of you,” I assure her. I do not think they understand the world at all. They seem to believe it is some poor, backward place with few amenities and ugly men who cannot find their own mates. They are going to be surprised.

It will be different for them, of course, but Mortevil is not lacking in anything other than females. And they will have their pick of males.

Finally, we arrive on Mortevil, and two nights later, the first welcome party takes place in the great hall. It is time for the males of Mortevil to meet the females. The air is practically crackling with romance and expectation.

There are also ‘matchmakers,’ those who already know the males and will now get to know the females. They will then suggest, based on their data, proper matches. For some it will be quick, but for others, it may take a while.

My gaze drifts to Beth, who stands alone against the wall, her eyes narrowed and suspicious, a little unsure. Iax stands across the room, his arms folded, his frown deep, glaring at her.

I laugh. Imagine two people so interested in each other but completely unable to see it. It’s ridiculous, really. I wander
